MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7 – DEAD RECKONING – 1 – MOVIE REVIEW

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is a 2023 spy action film directed by Christopher McQuarrie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. It is the sequel to Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) and the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible film series.

In this sequel of the MI (Mission Impossible) action film franchise, the filmmakers introduce AI as the enemy, leveraging technological advancements and catering to the franchise’s loyal fanbase. The movie kicks off with an impressive first action block, where the audience quickly grasps the nature of the threat. The film proceeds with a series of action scenes infused with humour, creating an exciting and adrenaline-pumping first half, highlighted by breathtaking stunts. Among these action sequences, there is a standout car chase that surpasses the rest in terms of spectacle and intensity. The humour, thrills, and excitement in the first half effectively engage the viewers and keep them invested in the story. However, the second half of the film encounters some struggles. The second half is lengthy and the plot becomes drawn-out, possibly lacking the same level of pacing and coherence as the first half. Additionally, the villain in the form of Gabriel can make a participant in Master Chef look much more startling thereby making the antagonist appear less formidable compared to the expectations set by the franchise’s previous villains.b
Despite these shortcomings, the climax of the film manages to set up anticipation for a potentially intriguing second part. It leaves the audience with unanswered questions or unresolved conflicts that can be explored and resolved in a future installment, creating a sense of curiosity and expectation for what lies ahead.

Overall, while the film excels in delivering an impressive and entertaining first half with its blend of action, humour, and thrilling stunts, it faces challenges in maintaining momentum and developing a compelling antagonist in the second half. Nevertheless, the cliffhanger ending offers the promise of a more engaging and captivating continuation in the future.
Tom Cruise at 61 is still convincing. It is the women who take the cake. Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Ferguson, Pom Klementieff and Vanessa Kirby all rock. Morales is the weakest link. The rest are good.

Technically as you would expect the film is from the top draw. Cinematography by Fraser Taggart is amazing. The action choreography and stunts are brilliant. Lorne Balfe’s musical score is worthy. Eddie Hamilton could have easily edited out a few minutes. Dialogues are decent. Direction is good.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7 is a decent ride to be watched on the biggest of screens for maximum fun !!!
