KOLAI is a murder mystery that is produced by Infiniti Film Ventures and Lotus Pictures and written and directed by Balaji Kumar.
Kolai credit shows its inspiration behind the tale from a few real life incidents. Few minutes and you realize the film has a different tone and treatment. The film has the usual murder mystery template with a lot of red herrings that do not look organic. The very artificial presentation makes it difficult for the viewer to identify with the characters or the happening on screen. Vijay Antony’s crisis is not something that moves us too. The film as it slowly pulls itself close to the climax makes it evident for the viewer to easily identify the killer who happens to be the only one left out.
Technically the film is good. Cinematography by Sivakumar Vijayan is unique. The aspect ratio is different and this makes the viewing a different experience. You get to see the frames differently with the ceiling and the floor in the same frame. Editing by Selva is neat. Dialogues are OK. Music by Girish is overbearing.
Vijay Antony is his usual self. Meenakshi is fresh. Ritika Singh is average. Murli Sharma is good. Radhika is artificial.
Direction is OK.
KOLAI is all style and no substance !!
