THANGALAAN – MOVIE REVIEW

THANGALAAN is an action adventure film[6] directed by Pa. Ranjith and produced by Studio Green, together with Neelam Productions and Jio Studios.

Ranjith is known for his kind of filmmaking that makes no bones exhibiting his political ideology that’s laced more with his particular preferences that include his symbolisms that are forcibly placed or communicated. This movie is no different, despite a plot that he went to town with in terms of history of the place and it’s histrionics Ranjith weaves in some.myth and some fantasy alongwith his obsession for his own sense of history. So what we end up having is a convoluted story that is lost somewhere in his three worlds. The flat narration alongwith the dull staging makes it difficult to engage with the on-screen proceedings. The writing is at its weakest when compared to his other films. While the first half is a boring sequence of events, the second half is no less a mess. The sync sound is tough to decipher with the strange dialect not easy for most to understand. The lacklustre climax doesn’t help either.

Vikaram is good and he delivers what’s expected out of him. Parvathy Thiruvothu is fine but at times her performance feels stretched. Malavika Mohan is good but has a small role. Pasupathy makes his presence felt. The rest are okay.

Cinematography by Kishor Kumar is fine. The VFX could have been better. Background score by GV Prakash is okay. Editing by Selva is good in parts. Dialogues are standard Ranjith template while direction is underwhelming.
