This Union attempts to blend elements of feel-good moments, action, comedy, and romance but falls short in each category.
The movie begins with a mission led by “The Union” that goes wrong. Such high-stakes opening scenes are usually meant to captivate the audience and set the tone for an intense experience, but this one fails to create the desired impact, resulting in a lackluster start.
Following the failed mission, Halle Berry’s character approaches Mike, played by Wahlberg, to recruit him. While their interaction adds some tension and interest, the story progresses slowly, and a mid-act twist, though significant, lacks the impact needed to reignite the audience’s engagement.
Mark Wahlberg introduces a much-needed tonal shift with his comedic timing and dialogue, injecting humor into the film. However, while some jokes land well, others miss the mark. If you’re familiar with Wahlberg’s previous work, the humor here will feel very familiar.
One of the film’s strengths is its use of London as a setting. The city’s historic sites and landmarks are beautifully showcased, adding a sense of grandeur and authenticity. The action sequences are abundant but often defy realism, with the laws of physics frequently ignored. This might appeal to fans of exaggerated action.
In summary, The Union offers plenty of action and a touch of humor but is weighed down by a weak storyline. Although packed with action, the quality doesn’t consistently match the quantity. It’s a film that entertains in moments but doesn’t fully deliver.
