Scene (2026) – Movie Review

A different kind of crime thriller that keeps you entertained!

Not every crime thriller needs to be serious, dark and intense throughout its runtime. Sometimes, adding the right amount of humour, interesting characters and unexpected situations can make the experience much more enjoyable. Scene, directed by Jithu Madhavan, attempts exactly that by blending crime, comedy and suspense into one entertaining package.

The film revolves around a police investigation involving a serial killer. However, what makes the narrative interesting is the way the director presents the characters and the situations surrounding the investigation. Rather than following the usual investigative thriller formula, the film takes a slightly unusual route, mixing serious developments with quirky humour. The first half does a good job of introducing the characters and setting up the story, while the subsequent developments bring several interesting moments. There are a few stretches where the screenplay loses its pace, but the overall narrative remains engaging.

Suriya is undoubtedly the biggest reason to watch this film. It is nice to see him in a role that gives him plenty of opportunities to showcase his lighter side. His expressions, body language and comic timing work beautifully, and he brings a certain charm to the character. What I particularly liked is that he doesn’t overdo anything. His performance feels relaxed and natural, making the character enjoyable to watch. It is always refreshing to see an established star step away from familiar roles and try something different.

Naslen is another pleasant surprise. He brings an interesting quality to his character, and his combination of innocence and unpredictability makes his portions engaging. His interactions with Suriya are among the enjoyable aspects of the film. Nazriya Nazim adds her natural charm and screen presence, and her combination with Suriya works well. Anandaraj also contributes some entertaining moments, while the supporting cast does a decent job of keeping the narrative lively.

Jithu Madhavan deserves credit for bringing his distinctive style of storytelling to Tamil cinema. His strength lies in creating unusual characters and finding humour in situations where we least expect it. The comedy feels more connected to the characters than deliberately inserted for laughs. However, the film isn’t without its shortcomings. A few scenes could have been shorter, and certain portions of the investigation could have been more gripping. The screenplay occasionally prioritises humour over the suspense, which slightly affects the overall intensity.

The technical departments do their job effectively. The cinematography suits the film’s atmosphere, while the editing keeps most of the sequences moving at a reasonable pace. Sushin Shyam’s background score adds to the mood, especially during the investigative and suspenseful moments.

Overall, Scene is an enjoyable attempt at combining crime and comedy without sticking to conventional storytelling. It may not be a flawless thriller, but the performances, humour and interesting characterisation make it worth watching. Suriya’s refreshing performance and Jithu Madhavan’s treatment are the film’s biggest strengths.

Final Verdict: A different flavour of crime comedy with entertaining performances and plenty of quirky moments. If you enjoy films that mix suspense with humour rather than taking themselves too seriously, Scene is worth giving a watch.
