The Paradise is a period action drama film directed by Srikanth Odela and produced by Sudhakar Cherukuri and Ishan Saksena, under Sri Lakshmi Venkateshwara Cinemas and IVY Entertainment, respectively.
KGF gave us a template that the audience lapped up with great enthusiasm. That make-believe world was smartly created by Prashant Neel and since then, many have attempted the same template with different motives, only to end up with duds.
The Paradise opens in a similar setting and the tiredness creeps in even before we can settle into our seats. The familiar settings and previously seen staging make it very difficult to watch. The story, too, set after Independence, lacks logic on all sides. At times, Peddi comes to mind.
The screenplay is a drag, with over-the-top scenes and drama built around a skeletal, done-to-death story. There is no respite even in the second half as the film hams its way towards a predictable end. Well, you can add and delete a few characters, but the story essentially remains the same.
The romance in the film is meaningless, thankfully. But the emotions, the drama and the socio-politics don’t really kick in either.
Nani tries hard, and that is the problem. A natural actor like him never had to try this hard in his earlier films. Here, you can actually see the effort, and it takes away from the natural ease that has been his strength.
Mohan Babu is stiff but his usual self. Kayadu Lohar’s only contribution is to do a provocative film within the film, and that sells. Sonali Kulkarni manages to impress.
Cinematography by CH Sai works in large parts. Music by Anirudh is average and will appeal to a particular audience. Dialogues are ordinary. Editing could have snipped a lot. Direction is subpar.
The Paradise is a pathetic attempt at a piteous story.
